In 1996 Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere the Founder and First Chairman of the Foundation made an explicit directive that his books, letters, speeches, reports, interviews, CD, DVDs, pictures and other information materials related to his activities in government, the party and all over the world, should be housed in the library to be established at the Foundation. Also as part of its function the Library shall enable the Foundation to maintain in good physical condition the collections, and maintain the Mwalimu Nyerere Library and Documentation Centre for students and scholars from all over the world to study Mwalimu Nyerere’s contribution to nation building, human development, and to peace and justice throughout the world. The Library shall provide space for resource sharing and networking at national, regional and international level. It services include: traditional reference services, reading service, research, consultancy, and library literacy.
Therefore. the main role of MNF Library is to preserve the historical record of Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere’s work and his political life. This collection will cover Mwalimu Nyerere’s contribution to humanity, as a national leader, an African liberation stalwart, an architect of African unity, an international statesman, and a staunch advocate for the Non Aligned Movement and South South Cooperation.
To that end the library has the ultimate responsibility to collect, restore and organize all documents, in the form of archives, speeches, books, pamphlets or articles that were published by Mwalimu Nyerere himself, and about Mwalimu Nyerere from all over the world.
