Guiding Themes

Peace, Unity and People-Centred Development are the three pillars on which the Foundation’s programmes are based.

PEACE is the child of justice, and it is understood within a context that recognizes that inequitable distribution of resources, the absence of justice, violation of fundamental freedoms and basic rights, the denial of social, economic and cultural rights, and inadequate civic participation may constitute causal factors of dissatisfaction, confrontation, conflict among and between peoples and nations. Conversely, the apparent and equitable dispensation of justice creates a social, economic and political environment of sustainable development and national cohesion. It is within this environment that the process of nation building flourishes, peace and justice prevail, and conflicts are prevented. If conflicts occur they can be resolved amicably and peacefully.

UNITY is conceived of as a situation in which peace prevails, and is built through the strength of cooperation, collective responsibility and mutual affiliation for individuals, communities and institutions. Conflicts in any society are a cause of divisions between communities and nations, and can be overcome through programmes aimed at enhancing unity and peace, through democratic governance, justice, and the eradication of poverty, diseases and ignorance. Preservation of unity is a virtue that requires to be nurtured and maintained at the national level, but also at the sub regional and continental level. Hence it is incumbent on the Foundation to foster national unity, integration initiatives at the sub regional and regional level throughout the African continent, and to enhance mutually beneficial relationship between Africa, the United Nations, and the international community at large.

PEOPLE-CENTRED DEVELOPMENT envisages the existence and availability of opportunities for people to actively participate in determining their social and economic well-being hence being involved in decisions relating to their lives. To realize this, the promotion of policy dialogue on social and economic activities that inculcate an attitude of self-reliance, self-respect and human dignity, shall be at the core of programmes of the Foundation. Such programmes and policy dialogues shall be aimed at improving knowledge, skills and techniques that are necessary in the process of capacity building that strengthens the people’s role as owners and active participants in the development process.
