In letter to Dr Nikos Georgulus on Proposed Julius Nyerere Centre,  Mwalimu Nyerere argued that “… I also welcome the possibility of a facility in a suitable location in the country, that would house my collected documents, concerned with African development and history” (Julius K, Nyerere 27th July 1994). Also in the first  Board meeting of the Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation in 1996, Mwalimu Nyerere observed that ” ….. it is fine history there shall be a library for people to see, ……… we would want a replica of Nyerere Library, …… all the original documents must be in the Foundation Library” (Julius K, Nyerere; 12nd November 1996)

The first Board Meting of the Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation decided to set up the Library and Resource Centre that would house Mwalimu Nyerere’s papers, books, and other related materials for preservation of  Mwalimu Nyerere’s ideas and historical record on Africa and the world. Since then the library has been set for that purpose, the work of improving the facilities is yet to be completed. The Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation has set a space in the MNF Square Building for the Mwalimu Nyerere Library and Resource centre, the building is expected to be ready by 2017. The idea of Mwalimu Nyerere Library will be better placed in this building and people will be able to see and learn from this library.

During the fundraising at the Kilimanjaro Hotel in Dar es Salaam 14th September 1996, Mwalimu Nyerere in his speech concluded that “.. we are being asked to contribute to a Foundation. But contrary to usual practices it is a Foundation without Money” (MNF 2000). As with any Permanent Institution, capital is needed to establish the Mwalimu Nyerere Library and Resource Centre, and meet its running costs throughout its life.
the Work of establishing and running of the Mwalimu Nyerere Library shall be financed in form of contributions from friends,  men & women, organizations and institutions, committed to the work and legacy of Mwalimu Nyerere.
